Who We Are

Nomad Scholars is an Australian-owned and operated homeschool education platform based in Queensland, Australia. We provide curriculum-aligned daily lessons for Prep–Year 12 students registered for home education. This policy explains how we collect, use, store and protect personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Queensland Information Privacy Act 2009.

What Information We Collect

We collect only the minimum information required to deliver our education service. This includes parent or guardian email address and first name, student first name only (we do not collect student surnames, dates of birth, addresses or government identifiers), year level and state of residence, account passwords (stored encrypted — we never see your password), lesson progress and completion data, written responses to lesson activities, morning check-in data (mood and energy levels), and quiz scores. We do not collect sensitive information as defined under the Privacy Act, including health information, racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, or biometric data.

How We Use Your Information

Your information is used solely to deliver the Nomad Scholars education service. Specifically, we use it to provide personalised curriculum content matched to your student's year level, track lesson progress so students can pick up where they left off, enable the Compass AI learning assistant to provide relevant support, sync progress across devices, generate progress reports for parents, and send password reset emails when requested. We do not use your information for marketing to third parties, advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to delivering education.

How We Store and Protect Your Information

All data is stored in Supabase, which uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure. Our database is hosted in the AWS Sydney region (ap-southeast-2), meaning your data stays in Australia. Security measures include encryption in transit (TLS/SSL) for all data transferred between your device and our servers, encryption at rest for all stored data, row-level security (RLS) policies ensuring families can only access their own data, secure password hashing using bcrypt, and role-based access control separating parent and student permissions. No Nomad Scholars staff member can see your password. Only authenticated users can access their own family's data.

Compass AI and Data Processing

Nomad Scholars includes an AI-powered learning assistant called Compass. When Compass is used, it receives only the current lesson context and the student's first name — no other personal data is shared. Compass conversations are not stored permanently or used to train AI models. The AI service is provided by Anthropic (Claude), which does not retain conversation data. No student data is sold to or shared with any AI provider.

In accordance with the Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024, we disclose that Compass uses automated decision-making processes to personalise lesson recommendations, assess student responses, and provide learning support. These automated processes are based on the student's year level, lesson progress and activity responses. No automated decision made by Compass will have a legally significant effect on your child. You have the right to request human review of any Compass interaction or recommendation by contacting us at privacy@nomadscholars.com.au.

Who We Share Your Information With

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with any third party for marketing or commercial purposes. The only third parties who process data on our behalf are Supabase (database hosting, Sydney region), Vercel (application hosting), and Anthropic (AI assistant, no data retention). Each of these providers maintains their own privacy policies and security certifications. We will only disclose information if required by Australian law or a court order.

Children's Privacy

Nomad Scholars is designed for use by students aged approximately 12–18 (Prep–Year 12). Student accounts are always created and managed by a parent or guardian. We minimise the data we collect about students — only a first name is required. Students cannot sign up independently. All student data is accessible to and controlled by the parent account holder.

Your Rights

Under the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to access any personal information we hold about you, request correction of inaccurate information, request deletion of your account and all associated data, withdraw consent and stop using the service at any time, and lodge a complaint if you believe we have breached your privacy. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email below. We will respond within 30 days.

Data Retention and Deletion

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you cancel your subscription or request deletion, all personal data including your student's progress, responses, and check-in history will be permanently deleted within 30 days. You can request full data export before deletion.

Cookies and Local Storage

Nomad Scholars uses browser local storage to maintain your login session and remember preferences (such as year level). We do not use tracking cookies, analytics cookies, or any third-party advertising cookies. No data is shared with advertisers.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. For significant changes, we will notify you via the email address on your account.
