How to register for home education in Tasmania (2026)

Who can register

From age 5 (as at 1 January) until 18, Year 12 completion, or Certificate III completion.

Step-by-step process

  1. Submit the OER application form plus a Home Education Summary and Program (HESP) for each child, addressing the 10 Standards in Regulation 5 (Literacy, Numeracy, Range of Learning Areas, Wellbeing, Pedagogy, Evaluation; plus Future Directions for ages 13+). Generic or commercial program text is not accepted as a HESP.
  2. Provisional registration is typically issued within 7–10 days — your child may then leave school.
  3. A Registration Officer conducts a registration visit, with the child present, assessed against the Standards.
  4. The Registrar decides on full registration — the whole process typically takes up to a few months end to end.
