How to register for home education in Queensland (2026)

Recent change

The Education (General Provisions) Amendment Act 2025 extended the upper age for registration from 17 to 18 (31 December of the year the child turns 18).

Who can register

6y6m to under 16 (or Year 10 completion) is compulsory; registration is available from 5y6m up to 31 December of the year the child turns 18.

Step-by-step process

  1. Prepare proof of identity/age (birth certificate, Medicare card), any relevant court orders, and an educational program summary.
  2. Apply online, by email, or by post to the Home Education Unit.
  3. Provisional registration is granted on notification, or you can use the separate 60-day provisional option which needs no program up front.
  4. The HEU decides on full registration within up to 90 days.

Reporting obligations
